Description:

From more than one hundred short stories written by Sinclair Lewis, here are twelve of the most outstanding. They disclose America’s first Nobel Prize winner to have been a gifted observer of the absurdities and horrors of American life. They run the gamut from tender sketches of lonely and frightened human beings adrift in harsh, impersonal cities to clever satires on the virtues of hard work and simple candour versus artiness and glib intellectuality. They reveal one of America’s greatest writers at his best.—Back Cover [Suggest a different description.]

Author Bio for Lewis, Sinclair

Author Image

Sinclair Lewis (1885-1951) was a noted American writer. He became known in the 1920s for his books that satirized the spartan materialism and intolerance that typified life in small towns across the country. The word 'babbitt' (his book by that name written in 1922), is still used as a synonym for middle-class philistinism. He refused the Pulitzer Prize for Arrowsmith (1925) but accepted the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1930, becoming the first American to be awarded that prize. (Chambers Biographical Dictionary)
