Author Bio for Howes, Edith
Edith Howes (1872-1954) was a New Zealand teacher and writer. Born in England, her family emigrated to New Zealand when she was a child. Her education led her to become an elementary school teacher. During her tenure, she noted that the teaching environment was held in small poorly ventilated rooms where teachers relied on rote methods and applications of corporal punishment. She instigated reforms which led to better school buildings, smaller class sizes and experiential learning. She also noted the lack of good books for teaching young children so she began to write some of her own. In all, she wrote 30 books for children, some of which ran into multiple printings. After retiring from teaching in 1919 she continued to write including some adult fiction. (Dictionary of New Zealand Biography)
Author Bio for Anderson, Florence Mary
Florence Mary Anderson (1889-1945) was an English artist and book illustrator. She also worked under a pen-name, Molly MacArthur. Born in Chelsea, she trained at the Westminster School of Art. She was primarily known as a stage designer for London theatres but she also illustrated a number of children's books working in watercolour and sometimes using simple woodcuts as in Eleanor Farjeon's "Come Christmas". She was active between 1914 and 1930 and is credited with illustrations in 12 books. (The dictionary of 20th century British book illustrators)
