Author Bio for Massey, Vincent
Vincent Massey (1887-1967) was a Canadian diplomat who served as the 18th Governor General of Canada. He was the first Governor General born in Canada. He was a member of a prominent Toronto family, who owned the Massey-Harris farm machinery company. He was educated at the University of Toronto and in England. After brief stints in the military and the government, he became a diplomat serving as ambassadors in the United States and England. He headed a Royal Commission on the arts which led to the establishment of the National Library of Canada and the Canada Council of the Arts. In 1952 he was appointed Governor General and served until 1959. During his term in office he travelled widely across the country and created several books about Canada. Speaking of Canada is a collection of speeches; On Being Canadian is an essay on cultural identity. He wrote his memoirs in 1962 - The Past is Prologue. Despite his faults and his somewhat insular beliefs on immigration, Massey was an ardent nationalist who believed on promoting Canada to the fullest. (Governor General's website)
