Description: | An American Captain Hornblower type of sea yarn set in Newport and the Indies in the 17th century. Hugh Jocelyn, orphaned by Indian terror, bred to the sea by his foster parents, gentled in the finer things through the tutoring of a derelict younger son, fought in himself the conflicts of ambition and pride and violence. Adored by women—who were of secondary importance to Hugh as he sought his fortune as privateer,—gunner, mate, captain, owner—in the treacherous Vineyard Sound and the open seas and the dangerous West Indies. He fought pirates—and England’s enemy—France. Hugh fought suspicion and jealousy and hate at home and abroad. Adventure, full-bodied characterization, an authentic feel of the times—for an overlong, overlush but eminently readable tale. [Suggest a different description.] |
