Author Bio for Sitwell, Osbert
Sir Francis Osbert Sacheverell Sitwell, 5th Baronet, i.e. Osbert Sitwell, was an English writer, poet, eccentric, and satirist. He was born on December 6, 1892 in London and died on May 4, 1969 in Florence, Italy. His elder sister was the well known art critic and poet Edith Sitwell. He grew up in the family seat of Renishaw Hall and various family mansions around Scarborough. A product of Eton, he joined the Grenadier Guards at the Tower of London in 1911 and fought in Belgium, near Ypres, during World War I,--where he wrote and published his first poetry. He left the army in 1918 with the rank of captain.
He met his long term partner David Stuart Horner, a writer of crime fiction, in 1923 and published his own first fiction The Triple Fugue in 1924. His 1947 Alive--Alive Oh! draws its stories from this work. A friend of the future George VI, father of Elizabeth II, he wrote a famous “libelous” poem Rat Week on the abdication of Edward VIII.
