Author Bio for Grove, Frederick Philip
Frederick Philip Grove (1879-1948) was a Canadian author, teacher, and translator. Born Felix Paul Berthold Friedrich Greve in Randomno, Germany, he was raised in Hamburg and attended university in Bonn and Munich. Initially he made a bare living translating books into German and published a few poems but he left Germany in 1909 due to debt problems and changed his name to Frederick Philip Grove. He started teaching in Manitoba but the writing itch still affected him. He published his first English language novel, "Over Prairie Trails" in 1922 and decided to quit teaching and devote the rest of his life to writing. He published about a dozen books including "In Search of Myself" in 1946 which won a Governor General's Award. Largely neglected during his life, his body of work has been the subject of several books and theses in the time since his death in 1948. (Canadian Encyclopedia)
