Agnes Strickland (1796-1874) was an English author and historian. She was born in London, England, the third daughter of Thomas Strickland of Reydon Hall. Her father tutored her in Greek, Latin, mathematics, and history. After her father's death she turned to publishing to support her family. She authored books of poetry and several romances before starting her books on history. She wrote two history books for children: Historical Tales of Illustrious British Children (1833) and Tales and Stories from History (1836). Her most notable work was a 12 volume project called the Lives of the Queens of England. Several of her other siblings were also writers including Catherine Parr Traill and Susanna Moodie both of whom published books about Canada after emigrating there with their husbands.
