Author Bio for Arliss, George
George Arliss was born Augustus George Andrews on April 10, 1868 in London, and died there on February 5, 1946. He was an English actor, author, playwright, and filmmaker. His father was a publisher, but he headed to the stage. He worked outside London and by 1900 had worked up to supporting roles in the West End. In 1901, he joined a troupe going to the U.S. where he stayed, playing Broadway, and touring with his popular role of Disraeli. He made his first silent film The Devil in 1921, transitioned successfully to ‘talkies’, and won an Oscar for Best Actor for his 1929 film Disraeli. As an established star himself, he helped promote the careers of future movie legends, such as Bette Davis, James Cagney, Randolph Scott, and Dick Powell.
