Author Bio for Grenfell, Wilfred T.

Wilfred Grenfell (1865-1940) was a Scottish doctor who devoted his life to medical service in Newfoundland. He graduated from medical school in 1888 and after listening to a preacher he decided to devote his career to service. He started work with the Nation Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen serving in the North Atlantic. During this time he became an expert sailor. In 1892 he visited Newfoundland to assess the need for medical services. The following year he returned with two doctors and two nurses and setup a hospital in Battle Harbour. Over the next forty years he travelled throughout Newfoundland and Labrador to administer to the inhabitants and visiting sailors. He wrote books and magazine articles to raise funds for his medical mission. He was an excellent publicist and raised funds through promotional tours and speeches. He was knighted in 1927.
