Author Bio for Bibaud, Michel
Michel Bibaud (1782-1857) was a Canadian journalist and historian. Born in Côte-des-Neiges in Montreal, he supported his family through teaching and journalism. From 1817 onwards he started publishing newspapers and periodicals including L'Aurore (1817-1819), Le Courier du Bas-Canada (1819), La Bibibliothèque canadienne (1825-1830) among others. In 1830 he published Epîtres, satires, chansons, épigrammes et autres pièces de vers, which was the first volume of verse published by a French Canadian. He also published an Histoire du Canada which was partially serialized in La Bibliothèque canadienne. Unfortunately his historical writing was didactic and chronological and was soon superseded by the superior history written by François-Xavier Garneau. He will best be remembered for his writings in his periodicals. He felt it was his mission to instruct his readers in practical science and literature. He also wrote about Aboriginal peoples with an emphasis on an anthropological rather than a stereotypical viewpoint. (Oxford Companion to Canadian Literature)
