Author Bio for Nutting, Herbert Chester
Herbert Chester Nutting was born on January 14, 1872 in New York City. He got his PhD from Yale in 1897 and became an instructor at the University of California Berkeley the same year. He was Chairman of its Department of Latin from 1922 until his death on September 23, 1934. He wrote extensively on Latin grammar and the comic playwright Plautus. In class, he was very much in the traditional mold of the boring Latin teacher: focused on how something was said (grammar and translation) rather than what was said. He fought to keep the teaching of Latin in California high schools, and his 1923 work “Ad Alpes: A Story of Roman Life” can be seen in that light.
