Author Bio for Pletsch, Oscar
Oscar Pletsch was a German illustrator. He was born on March 26, 1830 in Berlin and died on January 12, 1888 in Radebeul, near Dresden. Although born poor, his father was a drawing teacher and lithographer and he was able to study at the Art Academy in Dresden from 1846 to 1850. While there, he came under the influence of Ludwig Richter who taught him to focus on the simple, everyday aspects of life and family (the Biedermeier style) in his art. Richter also imparted his love of the woodcut to Pletsch. Pletsch stayed on in Dresden until 1855 before returning to Berlin. His first success came in 1860 with his illustrations for Die Kinderstube in 36 Bildern (The Nursery in 36 Pictures). From then until 1881, he produced a new children's book each year. In 1872, he moved back to near Dresden.
