Author Bio for Pach, Walter

Walter Pach was born in New York City on July 1, 1883 and died there on November 27, 1958. He was trained as an artist but is primarily known as an art adviser, lecturer, and historian. He worked organizing the influential 1913 Armory Show (New York, Chicago, and Boston) which is credited with introducing modern art, and an appreciation of it and its artists, to the U.S. He was a member of Gertrude’s Stein’s circle in Paris and wrote on European artists, such as the Duchamps, Seurat, and Van Gogh. In 1928, he wrote Ananias, or The False Artist, an indictment of corruption in the art world. Also in the 1920s, he began to lecture on Native American art and champion Mexican artists, such as José Clemente Orozco and Diego Rivera.
