Description:

From the Dustjacket:

"The making of this book enabled me to forget the gathering clouds: it is my great hope that the reading of it will enable others to forget the storm." -- Dornford Yates.

Dornford Yates has a big following doubtless because he always observes the cardinal rule that the novelist's first duty is to tell a good story. In "Shoal Water" he introduces a romantic young man (Jeremy Solon) into the life of Katharine Scrope, a beautiful girl forced into bad company for the sake of her blind father. There is a well balanced mixture of adventure villainy and romance in this novel. -- The Argus Sat. 29 March 1941. [Suggest a different description.]

Author Bio for Mercer, Cecil William

Author Image

Cecil William Mercer (1885-1960), better known by his pen-name, Dornford Yates, was a British author. Trained as a lawyer, he turned to writing in the 1920s. He is best known for a series of books featuring playboy Berry Pleydell. These books described Berry's wealthy, indolent life and his circle of friends. The books were very popular in the interwar years. Mercer also wrote a series of international thrillers centred around Richard Chandos, a suave crime solving detective. His work was influenced by the writings of Anthony Hope who was his uncle. (Chambers Biographical Dictionary)
