Description:

This book follows the story of a jester in the court of King Henry VIII. From the dust jacket:—Will Somers, with his flashing wit and natural exuberance of spirit, was his father’s despair and his uncle’s burden—the most expendable creature on the farm the day Richard Fermor asked for a lad to drive his sheep. A Shropshire boy, born to the directness and simplicity of country living, Will was also a schoolmaster’s son, trained in the rich subtleties of Latin, architecture and music beneath the lacework arches of Wenlock Priory—an odd figure to become a jester in bell-fringed buckram, with parti-colored hose, gay coxcomb and painted bladder on a stick. Yet by strange coincidence the King of England himself found Will “a witty, impudent knave.” And so the pomp and circumstance of the Tudor dynasty and the intrigues and revels of its glittering court passed before the observant eyes of a fool who was wise beyond his station.
