Author Bio for Badgley, Francis
Francis Badgley (1807-1863) was a Canadian doctor and professor. His father, also named Francis Badgley, was a member of the House of Assembly of Lower Canada. He trained as a doctor in Montreal and later Edinburgh, Belfast and Paris before returning to Canada in 1843. He established the Montreal School of Medicine and Surgery which sought to teach the medical sciences in French and English. In 1844 he and his colleague William Sutherland started the first medical journal in Montreal published in English, the Montreal Medical Gazette. It published monthly for two years before turning into the British American Journal of Medical and Physical Science. As a leader in the medical community he sought to bring all doctors in Canada under a single governing body. Four years after his death, the Canadian Medical Association was formed in 1867.
