His views and manner change when he marries Katherine. She subsequently charms students, teachers, and school governors. Mr. Chips is an effective teacher, highly regarded by students and governors and, in his later years, develops a sense of humor that pleases all. Hilton’s father, headmaster of Chapel End School, and W. H. Balgarmie, as master at The Leys school where Hilton attended, are both credited as the inspiration for the character Mr. Chips.
