Author Bio for Richardson, Sir John
Sir John Richardson (1787-1865) was a Scottish naturalist and Arctic explorer. A surgeon in the navy, Richardson was enamoured by the natural world. He travelled with Sir John Franklin on his 1819 Coppermine expedition. During the voyage he described rock formations, arctic flora and fish species they encountered. He later travelled with John Rae on one of the searches for Franklin's lost expedition. In his lifetime he explored the Canadian north extensively, visiting many places previously unseen by European explorers. (Dictionary of Canadian Biography)
