Author Bio for Bengough, J. W. (John Wilson)

John Wilson Bengough (1851-1923) was a Canadian cartoonist and poet. He was born and educated in Toronto. His first job was as a printer. In 1873 he founded Grip a humorous weekly. His cartoons were widely enjoyed by the public and collections of his cartoons were twice published as books (The Grip Cartoons). He was also politically active and published several brochures on his ideas. Some of these are collected in Bengough's Chalk-talks. He also published two volumes of verse. He was a popular entertainer and lecturer, likely due to his lampooning of politicians of the time. (Macmillan Dictionary of Canadian Biography)
