Author Bio for Fleming, May Agnes

Author Image

May Agnes Fleming (1840-1880) was a Canadian writer. Born in St. John, New Brunswick, she started her writing career early, publishing her first story at the age of 15. She was a prolific author, writing 47 novels which were often published as serials. At the height of her career she was making $10,000 a year. Her work was so popular that her novels were issued under different titles, a form of piracy. Her popularity was so great that publishers would sell books under her name that she hadn't even written. Many of her books feature strong female characters such as Lost for a Woman (1879). She died in 1880 of Bright's disease, a chronic kidney ailment. (Canada's Early Women Writers)
