Author Bio for Simcoe, Elizabeth
Elizabeth Simcoe (1762-1850) was an English author and artist. Her notoriety stems from her marriage to John Graves Simcoe who was named first Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada. During her husband's tenure, she accompanied him on his travels around the territory and documented through her diary her opinions and observations. She also sketched several places in Ontario in watercolour. She is responsible for naming Scarborough just east of Toronto and the township of Gwillimbury which is named after her family. Her diary was published in 1911 and remains as a unique perspective on the early days of the British colony. (Dictionary of Canadian Biography)
