Author Bio for Read, D. B. (David Breakenridge)
D.B. (David Breakenridge) Read (1823-1904) was a Canadian lawyer and author. In 1858 he was elected as a Toronto city councillor and during his tenure the current mayor resigned and he was appointed in his place. He served for 50 days until the next election (in those days elections occurred annually), the shortest mayoralty in the city's history. Read's legacy is not so much political as it is literary. He authored several books including biographies on Sir Isaac Brock and John Graves Simcoe. In 1888, he published "Lives of the Judges of Upper Canada and Ontario". It is a valuable insight into early Canadian jurists and is still read in legal circles to this day. (Dictionary of Canadian Biography)
