Author Bio for Cruikshank, E. (Brigadier General Ernest Alexander)

Ernest Alexander Cruikshank (1853-1939) was a Canadian military historian and biographer. Born in Welland (Canada West in 1853), he was educated at Upper Canada College. He served in municipal politics before enlisting in the army in 1877. He rose in the ranks to become commanding officer of the Lincoln and Welland Regiment in 1899. He retired in 1917 with the rank of Brigadier-General. He was chairman of the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada. In 1906 he was elected to the Royal Society of Canada and was awarded the Tyrell medal for distinguished contributions to Canadian history. He wrote numerous papers on many aspects of Canadian history and wrote several books and biographies dealing with Canadian military and political subjects.
