Author Bio for Boucher-Belleville, Jean-Philippe (Jean-Baptiste)

Jean-Philippe Boucher-Belleville (1800-1874) was a Canadian linguist and journalist. Born in Montreal, he received a classical education. He worked as a teacher and then became owner and editor of L’Écho du Pays, a political weekly paper popular with the Patriote movement. In the 1830s he became involved with the independence movement and during the Rebellion of Lower Canada was appointed quartermaster of the rebel organization. He was captured and made a prisoner. Released a year later he eventually obtained a job with the Montreal Department of Education. In addition to his newspaper publishing he also released some booklets on French linguistics. Dictionnaire des barbarismes et des solécismes . . . contains a list of French-Canadian colloquialisms which he published in 1855. (Dictionary of Canadian Biography)
