Author Bio for Collie, Ruth
Ruth Collie (1888-1936) was a British-Canadian poet. Born in Cambridge, England, she married Winnipeger Elisha Arakie Cohen which is where they settled. In 1913 she began writing book reviews for the Winnipeg Telegram. In 1917 she was hired as an editor and published poems and short stories. She continued her writing career at the Winnipeg Tribune and after her husband died in 1919 she worked for Eaton's writing advertising copy for their catalogue. She was elected vice-president of the Canadian Authors' Association which led to regular speaking engagements. In 1922 she signed a deal to write poetry for several North American papers which she did using the pen name Wilhelmina Stitch. In 1924 she married again to Frank Collie. She and her husband moved back to England where she continued writing poetry for the London Daily Graphic. Her daily poetry earned her the nickname, "the poem a day lady."
