FIRST MOTIF . . . Starting at center with Yellow, ch 7. Join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Ch 1, 16 sc in ring. Join to first sc. 2nd rnd: Ch 6, holding back on hook the last loop of each tr tr, tr tr in joining and in next sc, thread over and draw through all loops on hook (cluster made); ch 6, sl st in same sc as last tr tr was made; (sl st in next sc, ch 6, cluster over same sc and next sc; ch 6, sl st in same sc as last tr tr was made) 7 times. Break off and fasten (8 petals made). 3rd rnd: Attach White to tip of any petal, ch 1, (sc in tip of petal, ch 7, sl st in 5th ch from hook to form picot, ch 8, sl st in 5th ch from hook to form picot, ch 2small picot chain made) 8 times. SECOND MOTIF . . . FILL-IN MOTIF . . . With Green, ch 9, drop loop off hook, insert hook from right to wrong side through any free picot between 4 motifs and draw dropped loop through, ch 1, across ch-9 make sl st in first ch, sc in next 2 ch, h dc in next 2 ch, sc in next 2 ch, sl st in last 2 ch (leaf made); (ch 8, drop loop off hook, insert hook in next picot as before and draw dropped loop through, ch 1, across ch-8 make sl st in first ch, sc in next 2 ch, h dc in next 2 ch, sc in next 2 ch, sl st in last ch and in last sl st made on previous leaf—another leaf made) 11 times. Break off and fasten.

HALF FILL-IN MOTIF . . . Work exactly as for Fill-In Motif until 5 leaves have been made, joining the first leaf to the second picot preceding the large picot between 2 motifs.

EDGING . . . Attach White to last picot of large picot chain preceding a corner small picot chain on narrow side. 1st rnd: Ch 1, so in picot, ** ch 3, in next picot make tr, ch 3 and d tr; ch 5, in next picot make d tr, ch 3 and tr; ch 3, * across next large picot chain, make sc in first picot, (ch 2, sc in next picot) 3 times; ch 9, sc in center of next Half Fill-In Motif, ch 9. Repeat from * across side to within next corner small picot chain, ending with sc in last picot of large picot chain. Repeat from ** around. Break off and fasten. Run a double strand of thread or elastic around top of 4th rnd, place cover over hot plate and tie strands to hold cover in place.

Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Dc in first dc and in each dc across, 2 dc in last dc (1 dc increased at each end). Ch 3, turn. Repeat last row 13 (14, 15) times more. Working along side edge, make 3 dc over bar of each dc and turning chain, dc in each ch of starting chain, work other side to correspond. Ch 3, turn. Next 2 rows: Dc in each dc of previous row. Ch 1, turn. Sc in each dc of previous row and across top. Join with sl st to first sc. Break off and fasten.

STRAP . . . Ch 7. 1st row: Dc in 4th ch from hook and in next 3 ch. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Skip first dc, dc in next 3 dc, dc in top of turning chain. Ch 3, turn. Repeat last row until Strap fits comfortably around back of foot to front edge. Sew narrow edges in place as shown.

BACK STRAP . . . Work as for first Strap until length is 2½ inches. Break off and fasten. Sew one narrow edge to center of first Strap as shown. Sc closely around lower edge of first Strap and around outer edges of Back Strap. Working over elastic thread, sc across upper edge of first Strap.

SOLE (Make 2) . . . With double strand of Rose, ch 34 (38, 42). 1st rnd: 5 dc in 4th ch from hook (heel), dc in next 3 ch, h dc in next 2 ch, so in next 11 (13, 15) ch, h dc in next 2 ch, dc in next 11 (13, 15) ch; 7 dc in last ch (toe). Working along opposite side of starting chain, dc in next 11 (13, 15) ch, h dc in next 2 ch, sc in next 11 (13, 15) ch, h dc in next 2 ch, dc in next 3 ch. Join to top of ch 3. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, dc in joining, 2 dc in next 5 sts, dc in each st around, making 2 dc in each of 7 dc at toe. Join as before. Measure 3½ (3¾, 4) inches at center from toe end. ⅜ of a yard of light blue and white checked gingham, 36 inches wide with ⅛-inch checks; a piece of terry cloth 8 x 16 inches.

EMBROIDERY . . . Place a pin in a dark blue square 2 inches in from right selvedge edge, and 2 inches down from top edge for starting point A on chart.

Design is worked in cross stitch and long back stitch. When making cross stitches, top strands should all point in the same direction. Work symbols indicated on chart, in cross stitch and 3 strands.

Starting at A follow chart, completing design in long back stitches: feathers and tail with 3 strands of White; eye with 3 strands of Black, and feet with 6 strands of Gold Brown.

Having rooster in center, cut an 8¼-inch square. Cut another piece of gingham the same size for back. Using terry cloth for padding, baste pieces together. Sew bias tape around edges. Sew ring to right top corner.

BALL . . . Motif (make 12): Starting at center, ch 4. Join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Ch 1, in ring make 2 sc and 8 h dc. Do not join rnds. 2nd rnd: (H dc in next st, 3 h dc in next st) 5 times—20 h dc. 3rd rnd: H dc in next 2 h dc, (3 h dc in next h dc, h dc in next 3 h dc) 4 times; 3 h dc in next h dc, h dc in last h dc. Then make sc in next 3 h dc, sl st in next h dc. Break off and fasten. Matching corners exactly, sew one edge of each of 5 motifs to corresponding edges of 6th (center) motif. Priest’s Cincture . . . A-386

COATS & CLARK’S O.N.T. “SPEED-CRO-SHEEN” MERCERIZED COTTON 3 balls of No. 1 White.

Piece of cardboard 5 inches wide for tassels.

Measure off 14 yards of “Speed-Cro-Sheen.” Repeat 9 times, assembling 10 threads of 14 yards. Repeat, forming a second strand of 10 threads. Wind each strand smoothly into a ball, being careful not to tangle.

FIRST TASSEL . . . 1. Tie the ends of the two strands together as shown, winding and tieing a piece of “Speed-Cro-Sheen” around them 5 inches from end, as shown. Trim away ends of thread (Fig. 1).

2. Using another ball of “Speed-Cro-Sheen,” wind thread around the 5-inch wide cardboard 30 times. Cut thread through one fold, making a 30 thread strand 10 inches long. Place this over fork of tied ends, as shown (Fig. 2).

3. Fold down the two halves over the tied ends, as shown. Wrap and tie another thread around them, as shown. Thread ends into a coarse needle; put through head of tassel, trim off. Trim tassel evenly to about 4½-inch length (Fig. 3).

Cincture measures approximately 3 yards long

CORD . . . Note: Once you have started, remember never to let go of your work until cord is finished. Hold one strand in each hand.

4. Pick up strand with forefinger of left hand, as shown. Hold strand above tassel with thumb and forefinger (Fig. 4).

5. Insert forefinger of right hand in the loop you have formed (Fig. 5).

6. Pick up right-hand strand and draw through left-hand loop, as shown (Fig. 6).

7. Take hold of tassel with thumb and middle finger of right hand. Left hand pulls strand tight (Fig. 7).

8. Insert forefinger of left hand in right-hand loop (Fig. 8).

9. Pick up left-hand strand and draw through right-hand loop, as shown (Fig. 9).

10. Take hold of tassel with thumb and middle finger of left hand. Right hand pulls strand tight (Fig. 10). Repeat Steps 4 through 10 until cord is finished. Thumb and middle finger of first one hand, then the other, constantly hold cord just below loop. Right hand draws up right-hand strand. Left hand draws up left-hand strand.

When you are within about 6 inches of the end of your two strands of thread, make another tassel as follows:

SECOND TASSEL . . . 11. Repeat Step 2, placing the prepared 10-inch strand through last loop in cord exactly as shown. Pull loop tight (Fig. 11).

12. Fold all thread ends down, tie as shown and finish in same way as first tassel (Fig. 12).

SUGAR STIFFENING . . . In a pot large enough to hold crocheted pieces, mix ⅓ cup of water with 1 cup of sugar. Boil for 2 minutes. Put pieces into mixture and boil for 2 more minutes, stirring continually to insure even distribution of syrup through pieces. Remove pieces, pin out on a padded surface following original measurements and outline or mold into desired shape. Allow to dry thoroughly.

STARCHING . . . Follow directions on packaged starch. The stiffness of the starched article is governed by individual taste.
