DIAMOND JUBILEE

OF

HER MAJESTY QUEEN VICTORIA

Sunday, June 20th, 1897.

VICTORIA, BRITISH COLUMBIA.

Order of Service arranged by Barlow Cumberland, Supreme Grand President
of the Sons of England, and approved of by Her Most Gracious Majesty
Queen Victoria.

Parade Service of H. M. Forces, Societies and Citizens at Beacon Hill.

The Services of the day will commence in the Colonies of New Zealand and Australia, where Services have been arranged, afterwards in South Africa, and so will follow the sun westward. Upon the sun having crossed the ocean and reached the continent of America, the brethren in St. Johns, Newfoundland, will re-commence the anthem, which will then be taken up in succession, across the continent through Canada, as the precise time reaches each, from the Atlantic to the Pacific. The Citizens at Victoria, British Columbia, will send it across the Pacific, back to the place of beginning, having kept company with the hours and traversed the world in one unbroken line through the Colonies of the Empire of the Union Jack.

This continual anthem and prayer will be the loyal and affectionate tribute of Britains Sons to their gracious Queen upon the Diamond Jubilee of her accession to the Throne.

The Service shall commence at 3.30 p. m. by singing.

Opening Hymn.

Tune: Old Hundredth.

All people that on earth do dwell,
Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice;
Him serve with fear, His praise forth tell,
Come ye before Him, and rejoice.
The Lord, ye know, is God indeed;
Without our aid He did us make;
We are his flock, He doth us feed,
And for His sheep He doth us take.
O enter then His gates with praise,
Approach with joy His courts unto;
Praise, laud, and bless His name always,
For it is seemly so to do.
For why? the Lord our God is good;
His mercy is for ever sure;
His truth at all times firmly stood,
And shall from age to age endure.
To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,
The God whom Heav'n and earth adore,
From men and from the angel-host
He praise and glory evermore.       Amen.

To be followed by the “Lord's Prayer,” and a short address by the Chaplain.

At 4 p. m. precisely, according to Astronomical time, being the time at which the sun passes over each locality, the Royal Standard shall be run up to the Mast-head.

The Assembly will sing the National Anthem during which the District Deputy of the Sons of England will deliver the Union Jack and the Canadian Ensign (bonded together) to the Chaplain.

The National Anthem, to be sung at 4 o'clock, sun time precise.

God Save the Queen.

God save our gracious Queen,
Long live our noble Queen,
God save the Queen;
Send her Victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us;
God save the Queen.
O Lord our God arise,
Scatter her enemies.
And make them fall;
Confound their politics,
Frustrate their knavish tricks;
On Thee our hopes we fix,
God save us all.
Thy choicest gifts in store
On her be pleas'd to pour,
Long may she reign;
May she defend our laws,
And ever give us cause
To sing with heart and voice,
God save the Queen.

The Chaplain will then say the following Collects:

THANKSGIVING FOR HER MAJESTY'S ACCESSION TO THE THRONE.

Almighty God, who rulest over all the Kingdoms of the World, and disposest of them according to Thy good pleasure; we yield Thee unfeigned thanks for that Thou was pleased as on this day to place Thy servant, our Sovereign Lady Queen Victoria, upon the Throne of this Realm. Let Thy wisdom be her guide, and let Thine arm strengthen her; let justice, truth and holiness, let peace and love, and all those virtues that adorn the Christian Profession flourish in her days; direct all her councils and endeavors to Thy glory and the welfare of her people; and give us grace to obey her cheerfully and willingly for conscience' sake, that neither our sinful passions, nor our private interests, may disappoint her cares for the public good; let her always possess the hearts of her people, that they may never be wanting in honor to her Person, and dutiful submission to her Authority; let her Reign be long and prosperous and crown her with immortality in the life to come; through Jesus Christ our Lord.       Amen.

THE PRAYER FOR THE QUEEN AND ROYAL FAMILY.

O Lord our God, who upholdest and governest all things in heaven and earth; receive our humble prayers with our thanksgiving for our Sovereign Lady Victoria, as on this day set over us by Thy grace and providence to be our Queen; and so together with her blest Albert Edward the Prince of Wales and all the Royal Family; that they all, ever trusting in Thy goodness, protected by Thy power, and crowned with Thy gracious and endless favor, may continue before Thee in health, peace, joy and honor, and may live long and happy lives upon earth, and after death obtain everlasting life and glory in the kingdom of heaven by the Merits and Mediation of Christ Jesus our Saviour, who with the Father and the Spirit liveth and reigneth even one God, world without end.       Amen.

Closing Hymn.

O God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Our shelter from the stormy blast,
And our eternal home;
Beneath the shadow of Thy Throne
Thy saints have dwelt secure;
Sufficient is Thy Arm alone,
And our defence is sure.
Before the hills in order stood,
Or earth received her frame,
From everlasting Thou art God,
To endless years the Same.
A thousand ages in Thy sight
Are like an evening gone;
Short as the watch that ends the night
Before the rising sun.
Time, like an ever-rolling stream,
Bears all its sons away;
They fly forgotten, as a dream
Dies at the opening day.
O God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Be thou our guard while troubles last,
And our eternal home.

During the singing a collection will be taken up by the Committee in aid of the B. C. Benevolent Society.

Addresses.
